Twilight Switch
Does a twilight switch malfunction in bad weather or cloudy conditions?
Twilight switch performance in adverse weather:
- Cloud cover operation : Photocells measure total ambient light (direct sun + scattered sky light). Overcast daylight still 500–1000 lux (far above typical 30–50 lux ON threshold). Lights remain OFF during cloudy days. Only at true dusk (regardless of clouds) does light drop below threshold.
- Hysteresis prevents flicker : Socomec relays include ON/OFF hysteresis gap (e.g., ON at 30 lux, OFF at 80 lux). Single cloud passing during twilight doesn't trigger lights; only sustained darkness below threshold activates relay.
- Rainy conditions : Heavy rain reduces ambient light 10–20% vs clear sky; does not cause premature activation if threshold correctly set. Photocell sensor IP65 sealed; water doesn't affect optical element.
- Extreme fog : Dense fog (visibility <50m) may reduce ambient light to triggering threshold prematurely (15–30 min earlier than clear-sky dusk). Manual override switch allows temporary lighting OFF during fog clearing. Alternative: increase sensitivity (higher lux threshold) if premature activation problematic.
- Snow/ice accumulation : Dirty photocell (covered by snow/ice) effectively blind; lights remain OFF. Annual maintenance includes photocell cleaning (soft cloth + water) and seasonal inspection for ice buildup.
- Street lighting interference : Nearby street lamps or building flood lights can raise ambient light above threshold, preventing twilight activation. Solution: relocate photocell away from external light sources or reduce sensitivity (lower 500 lux threshold to 100 lux if feasible).
- Seasonal variation : No manual adjustment needed. Photocell automatically compensates for seasonal daylight duration changes. Summer late sunset = lights OFF until 21:30+; winter early sunset = lights ON by 17:00.
Socomec photocell relays (PIL6, PIL7) tested per IEC 60950 in temperature/humidity extremes (-20°C to +70°C). Hysteresis design proven field-reliable 20+ years. Optim-Elec specifies threshold per site cloudiness/street lighting. Contact optim-elec.com for installation site survey.
