Transfer Switch
When should I use a transfer switch in my installation?
Transfer switch use cases:
- Hospitals & healthcare facilities : Operating theaters, ICUs, life-support equipment require uninterruptible power. ATS + UPS + standby generator standard per EN 60204-1 medical device safety.
- Data centers & server farms : Server downtime costs €5k–€50k/minute depending on service criticality. ATS switches load to backup before UPS battery depleted (5–15 min typical UPS autonomy).
- Emergency services : Police/fire stations, command centers. Power loss halts critical communications. ATS mandatory per building code.
- Telecommunications infrastructure : Base stations, network operations centers. Continuous operation required; even seconds of downtime affect thousands of users.
- Industrial manufacturing : Process loss during power cuts forces costly restart procedures. Example: pharmaceutical GMP batch loss (€100k+), chemical process faults requiring safety shutdown.
- Commercial buildings with backup diesel gensets : Multiple tenants, retail operations. ATS automates primary-to-backup switchover rather than relying on manual operation or single-point-of-failure manual switch.
- Non-critical installations without ATS : Residential, small offices, warehouses with non-sensitive loads. Manual switch sufficient; brief outage tolerable.
Socomec recommends ATS when: (a) backup power source available, (b) load criticality justifies cost, (c) outage duration impact > €50k or life-safety risk. Optim-Elec evaluates installation tier and recommends appropriate switching equipment. Contact optim-elec.com.
