Energy Meter
What does MID certification mean for energy meters?
MID certification standard for energy meters:
- MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) 2014/32/EU : European Union legal framework mandating performance standards and certification for measuring instruments used in commerce (including electricity metering for billing).
- Certification scope : MID applies to meters sold into EU for official billing (utility invoicing, customer cost allocation, regulatory reporting). Non-certified meters unsuitable for legal billing regardless of technical accuracy.
- Accuracy requirements : MID meters must achieve Class 0.5S (0.5% maximum error) or 0.2S (0.2% max error) over operating range 4–20A (typical consumer load). Error limits strictly defined by IEC 62053-22 within specific temperature/humidity ranges.
- Testing protocol : Notified Body (independent EU laboratory) tests representative meter samples per: - IEC 62053-22 (static accuracy under reference conditions: 23°C, 50/60 Hz, rated voltage). - IEC 62052-11 (metrological data). - IEC 62054-21 (electromagnetic immunity). - IEC 61000-4-X (environmental stress tests: temperature extremes -10°C to +55°C, humidity 45–75%, EMI resistance 50V AC injection).
- Certification mark : Approved meters display "CE" mark on face + "MID" marking on nameplate or technical documentation. Certificate number identifies Notified Body and approval year.
- Non-certified meter limitations : Cannot be used for: - Official utility billing (illegal per Directive). - Tenant cost allocation in multi-unit buildings (regulatory requirement in most EU countries). - Government statistical energy consumption reporting. - Legally-disputed consumption claims (customer can reject invoice if measured by non-certified meter).
- Non-certified meter permitted uses : - Internal energy monitoring / facility energy management (ISO 50001). - Load analysis, efficiency studies, power quality assessment. - Equipment protection relay (tripping overcurrent conditions). - Data center/industrial process monitoring (non-billable).
- MID certification cost impact : Socomec MID-certified meters (DIRIS A60 MID, POWERSYS MID versions) premium ~15–25% vs standard models. Testing/approval cost passed to customer; justified by legal billing capability.
- Validity period : MID certificate typically valid 10 years from issue. Manufacturer may request renewal if substantive design changes occur (different component suppliers, firmware update affecting measurement algorithm).
Optim-Elec recommends MID-certified Socomec meters exclusively for any billing or cost-allocation application. Verify "MID" marking before purchase; ask Socomec for current certification documentation. Non-compliance risks €10k–€1M+ fines depending on market/violation severity.
