Smart Time Switches
What devices and loads can be controlled by time switches?
Time switch load applications:
- Lighting systems : Street lamps, building facade lights, parking area lights. Typical 1–10A per circuit. Socomec handles 16A contact rating per SPDT relay. Multiple circuits via multi-relay units.
- HVAC (heating/ventilation/air conditioning) : Fan motors, electric heaters, heat pumps. Typically 6–12A. Time switch triggers contactor for smooth motor starting; avoids inrush current damage.
- Water pumps : Booster pump systems, circulating pumps in solar thermal installations. 5–15A typical. Programmable scheduling prevents nighttime unnecessary circulation (energy savings).
- Compressors (air, refrigeration) : Control spray painting booths, industrial refrigeration duty cycles. Prevents compressor short-cycling, extends motor lifespan.
- Ventilation : Dust extraction systems, toilet/stairwell extraction fans. Energy management by scheduling night extraction for odor removal.
- Electric boilers : Water heater on-demand scheduling. Example: OFF 06:00–18:00 (daytime occupancy assumed), ON 04:00–05:00 (morning heating) and 18:00–22:00 (evening); saves €200–400/year per boiler.
- Security & access control : Electric locks, gate openers, security lighting. Time switch enables automatic gate closure at night without manual intervention.
- Irrigation systems : Outdoor garden/landscape watering. Time switch enables multi-start watering days/times. Soil moisture sensors optional integration for water conservation.
- Manufacturing duty cycles : Industrial ovens, welding equipment standby, production line conveyor motors on/off per shift schedule.
- Load current limits : Standard relay contacts rated 16A AC resistive. Inductive loads (motors) typically derate to 5–10A. If load exceeds rating, use external electromagnetic contactor (time switch triggers contactor coil).
Socomec PIL range supports multiple output relays (2–8 relays per module) for complex building automation. Integration with BMS (Modbus communication) enables centralized scheduling across multiple zones. Optim-Elec designs schedules per HVAC zones, lighting scenes, production cycles.
