How do I choose the right load break switch for my installation?

Load break switch selection criteria:

  • Voltage rating : LBS must match or exceed installation voltage. Standard options: 230V AC (single-phase), 400V AC (three-phase industrial), 440V (some regions), 660V/1000V (medium voltage special installations). Verify utility supply voltage before ordering.
  • Current rating : Select LBS current ≥ maximum facility demand. Examples: 50A residential, 100A small commercial, 400A industrial plant. Socomec range: 100A, 160A, 250A, 400A, 630A per IEC 60947-3. Oversizing slightly acceptable (lower cost per spare).
  • Poles (phases) : 1P (single-phase 230V), 2P (single-phase isolates L+N), 3P (three-phase no neutral), 4P (three-phase + neutral isolation). Industrial 400V typically 3P or 4P. 4P preferred if neutral switching required (maintenance safety).
  • Load breaking capacity : Rated per IEC 60947-3 categories. Ue (rated voltage), Ie (rated current), Icm (load breaking capacity = 1.5–6× Ie depending on chamber design). Standard commercial-grade: 3× rated current. Industrial-grade: 6–10× rated current.
  • Arc suppression chamber type : Standard (carbon), enhanced (mineral-filled), vacuum (rare). Carbon chambers adequate for <630A; mineral-filled for 630A+. Ask Socomec datasheets for chamber specification.
  • Handle operation force : 250V typical manual force (no power assistance). Verify operator physical capability. Some installations add electric motor assistance (solenoid trip) for very high current (>1000A MV systems).
  • Mounting style : DIN-rail (standard switchboard), panel-mount flush (compact enclosures), toggle-handle or rotary-handle. Rotary-handle preferred for industrial (positive ON/OFF feel); toggle adequate for small installations.
  • IP rating : IP54 minimum (dust/water jet protection). IP65 for wet environments (wash-down areas, marine facilities).
  • Socomec sizing examples : - Small office (60A max demand) → Socomec 100A/400V 3P - Manufacturing plant (300A main demand) → Socomec 400A/400V 4P - Data center UPS feeder (200A) → Socomec 250A/400V 3P
