What is a transfer switch?

A transfer switch is a device designed to provide fast, simple, safe and controlled switching between different power sources. It offers the possibility of switching between the electricity grid and a generator, between different grids, or between different on-site energy sources, such as solar panels and generators.

Different types of transfer switch applications

Residential and commercial applications

In residential applications, transfer switches are often used in conjunction with emergency generators. In the event of a power failure, the transfer switch instructs the generator to start up and then automatically switches to the generator when it has completed its start-up phase, ensuring a constant power supply. This is also essential in businesses, particularly data centres, where continuity of power supply is critical to avoid data loss and costly downtime.

Industrial and university applications

Factories and university campuses with their own power plants also use transfer switches. These devices can switch between different power sources, ensuring uninterrupted power supply even in the event of a mains power failure.

Three categories of use

In general terms, source transfer switches are needed in three categories of use:

They are used to switch between :

  • The electricity grid and a generator
  • Between different mains supply networks
  • Between different on-site power sources, such as solar panels and generators

From the grid to a generator (Utility-to-Generator)

These transfer switches make it possible to keep an installation operational while preventing electricity from flowing back to the grid, thereby guaranteeing the safety of grid workers. They are typically used in homes, businesses and government departments using electric generators.

Grid-to-grid (Utility-to-Utility)

These transfer switches are used when the installation is equipped with several power supply networks. They enable electricity consumers to switch from one service to another according to operational, technical or economic requirements.

From local source to local source (Generator-to-Generator)

These transfer switches are required in locations with multiple on-site power sources, such as a house with solar panels and a generator.

They allow switching between the different sources while guaranteeing electrical isolation between the different sources.

When choosing a transfer switch, the criteria to be taken into account are voltage, power, number of phases, switching mode, tolerable interruption time and environment. These must be checked to ensure safety and optimum performance.

By investing in suitable transfer switches, you can ensure uninterrupted power supply, whatever the context, guaranteeing continuity of electrical operations. Opt for peace of mind by ensuring a smooth transition between different power sources thanks to a suitable transfer switch.
